Learning shapes and geometry in kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades

Shapes are fun, but do you know how to determine which one is square? Rectangle? Or circle? Some shapes can be confusing to identify but with proper explanation, you can easily recognize which one is the star, triangle, or diamond.
Let’s start with the shape that has all equal sides, the square. A square has 4 sides and each of those sides are equal, it will always stay that way, unlike a rectangle.
A rectangle also has 4 sides but compared to a square, not all sides of a rectangle are equal. Two sides of a rectangle are relatively shorter than the other two sides of it, take note that two sides facing each other should be of the same size but not all sides should be equal. It also has 4 right angles measuring 90° each.
Next is a circle, which can be defined as a round shape with no sides. Just a simple round shape that is called a circle.
Related to a circle is the shape oval, which is an imperfect circle or round shape. An example of an oval shape is the shape of eggs.
Now a triangle, this shape can be pretty easy to remember as it only has three sides and corners. All angles of a triangle are equal to 180°.
How about a star shape? A star shape has five corners and has ten sides. It’s like 5 triangles fused into one. One example of star shapes is a starfish or Patrick from Spongebob Squarepants.
Lastly, a diamond. A diamond is just like a square with 4 equal sides, but it doesn’t quite look like a square. You can try to draw a square on paper and slightly tilt it to the side, there you have it a diamond shape.
