The second entails the use of the distributive property of multiplication. This property is valuable in breaking down larger numbers, so that smaller parts are more easily solved and added together to find the total product.
The logic of the property boils down to the fact that a number – say, 27 – can be written as the sum of two smaller numbers, like 20 + 7. Multiplying 27 by 8 can be a little challenging, but the distributive property states that 8 can be multiplied to both 20 and 7 – or 8(20+7) – to get 160+56. These numbers can then be added to yield 216, which is actually the correct answer to 27 times 8.
