Geometry will take a slightly more difficult but exciting turn in your child’s third grade as they pick up how to multiply numbers. This is because multiplication allows kids to explore some fun, new properties about their favourite shapes, such as calculating for their areas. Solving for the area of a simple shape like a square can be relatively easy to understand. A more challenging task comes in the form of solving for a triangle’s area.
You can check out our collection of Grade 3 triangle area worksheets on this page to find some additional learning materials for your child’s lessons. You’re welcome to save, download and print these sheets to serve a versatile range of needs. Thinking of surprising your learners with a pop quiz? Or perhaps you want to give them a mental workout with a long test or exam? Are you working out ideas for their next homework or group activity? These worksheets have got you covered for all of these purposes.
Two values are essential in solving for a triangle’s area. The first value is the length of the triangle’s bottom side, or its base. The second value is its height. We can define it as the measurement of the line stretching from the midpoint of the base to the vertex at the opposite end. At the very beginning, these two values will be provided to your kids. As they progress through the grade, however, they can be tasked with deriving these values themselves.
There are loads of fun activities that you can employ to help your kids practice their area finding skills. If you’re a homeschooling parent trying to teach multiple kids, for example, you can invite your kids to snack on watermelon slices, pizza, tortilla chips, or other foods with a triangular shape. The catch is that they have to measure the area of their snack before everyone can dig in. Armed with a ruler, pen, and paper, you can either challenge them to see which one gets the correct answer for their snack first to develop their speed, or have them work together to build teamwork.
Another way to round out their skill in this geometry topic is by letting them work on an ordinary area problem in reverse – that is to say, you’ll provide them with the area of a hypothetical triangle and task them with finding its base and height. Of course, there will usually be several possible answers for both values, so you can get them to find all of them. They can then demonstrate their solutions to their fellow students.
With diligent study and a fair bit of encouragement from parents and teachers, you might be surprised to find your learner breezing through third grade math.
