As a competency, addition can appear out of place in the fifth grade math curriculum. It is such an ubiquitous skill, used in plenty of other processes that your students will have encountered in previous years, that children will find it rather banal to continue learning about it so late into elementary school math.
Such a declaration does come with confidence – as fifth-graders have a handful of years’ worth of experience in solving addition problems. However, they will come to learn that this topic still has a few nuggets of wisdom to teach. At this point, any assessments focused on addition will contain numbers with several digits to try and challenge children with crunching through bigger and bigger sums, but many kids will simply be unfazed, especially if they’ve honed their adding skills regularly with the help of our Addition Sums for Class 5 practice exercises.
To keep things exciting, fifth-grade addition problems can toy with plenty of the concepts found in earlier lessons. Adding decimals together, for instance, adds another layer of complexity to this operation. Pre-algebra topics at this level can also mingle a little with addition, such as in the case with adding variables together and solving an equation if different values for one variable are provided.
There are also a few properties to addition which students will need to internalize, as they will become all the more relevant when multi-step operations and the use of PEMDAS/BODMAS enter the fray.
With whole numbers, students should jot down four properties in particular.
The property of closure, as an example, stipulates that two whole numbers added together will always yield another whole number.
The commutative property, on the other hand, rules that the sum of a set of numbers does not change based on the order with which the addends are added. Similarly, according to the associate property, numbers added together yield the same sum regardless of the way they are grouped.
Lastly, any number added to zero remains the same based on the identity property.
