It seems fitting – and even a tad amusing, to some kids – that the behemoth topic of algebra comes knocking on their door right as students in the sixth grade are about to graduate from years of learning basic math skills. Your learners will have come a long way – from adding double-digit numbers in first grade, to getting their first taste of algebra at the cusp of secondary school. It’s a thrilling time indeed.
Needless to say, kids can become troubled about the prospect of having to tackle math that involves letters. Letters! Some kids worry if they’ll even be able to pass secondary-level math with beasts like algebra, and much later, calculus and trigonometry lurking around. It’s healthy and ordinary for students to feel this way, and if they wish to improve and become ready of handling this “big kid” branch of math, you can help them train with these Algebra Grade 6 Worksheets.
Several factors can help nurture a child’s ability to conquer the field of high school-level algebra. Practice is necessary – but it has to be the healthy kind of practice: regular and consistent, while allowing for enough rest and breaks for a child to recover mentally and physically. Something that can also go a long way is support and encouragement from their parents and instructors. Kids with a competitive streak even derive a sense of motivation from needing to one-up their friends and rivals.
In the sixth grade, your kids should be primed to work with evaluating algebraic expressions and identifying or using variables. They will mostly handle single-step equations, where variables are used in arithmetic operations, and featured alongside fractions, decimals and integers.
Vocabulary is crucial; kids will discover the definitions behind common terms, such as variables, coefficients, and constants. They will also tinker a bit with graphing.
