Addition of mixed numbers basketball game
There are different types of fractions with like and unlike denominators, or improper and mixed fractions. These fractions can be converted into decimals or a mixed number can be turned into improper ones. You can add, subtract, divide, or even multiply fractions with either unlike or like denominators as well as improper and mixed fractions.
So, for an example of how to add mixed fractions, we are going to have fractions with common denominators. Let’s say we have 1 ½ plus 2 ½, the first step is to convert mixed fractions into improper fractions to determine the answer if added together.
In converting mixed fractions into improper fractions, we must multiply the denominator first to the whole number. In our example, our denominator is 2 and the whole number is 1 and if we multiply them together, we will get the answer of 2. After multiplying the denominator with its whole number, we are going to add the answer to the numerator, which in our example is 1. So, 2 + 1 is 3, therefore the improper fraction of 1 ½ is 3/2.
Going to the next mixed fraction we have, 2 ½. Just repeat the same steps we did earlier, multiply the denominator with the whole number, 2 x 2 then add the product to the numerator. So, we will have 4 + 1 = 5. Therefore, the improper fraction of 2 ½ is 5/2.
Now that all the mixed fractions are improper with common denominators, we can now add them together. So, remember that when adding fractions with the same denominators, we only need to add the numerators and copy the denominator. In conclusion, the answer to 1 ½ + 2 ½ is 8/2 or the answer would be 4 if we simplify the answer.
