5th grade addition of fractions game - Hi there, Math wizards! We welcome you to our series of Math games filled with amusements and knowledge! A test of how smart and great your Math wizard spirit within you! But, first, let’s dive in with our topic for today-- the addition of fractions! Let’s take this scenario as an example, you are having a party and noticed that there are two boxes of pizza on the table, as you opened it, there is only 1 slice left for each of the boxes. Then, you tried to analyze how many pizzas were eaten and how many slices were left. That kind of simple analysis is an example of a real-life situation of adding fractions! Now, to help you know more about the addition of fractions, familiarize these simple steps: For adding fractions with similar denominators, just add the numerators and put the sum above the same denominator. And lastly, simplify the fraction if possible. If you don’t know yet how to simplify, just find the common factor of the numerator and denominator, and divide it by that number to attain the simplified version of the added fraction. For adding fractions with unlike denominators, you first find the least common multiple (LCM) of the two denominators (LCM is a common multiple to two whole numbers which both of these numbers divide into evenly, for example, the LCM of 4 and 5 is 20). After that, put the new denominator in a new fraction. Next process, divide the new denominator with the first old denominators, then the quotient of it should be multiplied by its numerator, then the final product shall be put above the new denominator, and repeat the same process for the second old denominator. After getting the two final products, add them, and the sum will be the numerator of the new denominator. Lastly, simplify the numbers if possible. That surely is a long process, isn’t it? But don’t fret, once you will get the hang of it, it will just be a piece of cake for you!
