5th grade subtraction of fractions game - Ahoy, Math wizards! For today’s fun and informative game, we will be talking about the subtraction of two fractions! What are we waiting for? Let us jump directly into the lesson! We all know that subtraction is the reverse of addition, something you should have mastered before diving into the world of fractions. It was also taught to you last grade level how to add basic fractions and you excelled with it. And now, let’s move on to subtracting fractions. Subtraction and fraction combined may not sound fun and easy at all, but hey, you have passed different not-so-easy topics before, for sure you can also master this! Although subtracting fractions is more challenging than regular deduction, there is a teaching approach that makes it as simple as one, two, three! Like most Math equations especially with fractions, you will have to do a tiny bit of work before finding the right answer. In order for us to achieve it, follow these instructions: First, make the denominators the same, if the given fractions have unlike denominators, we need to make it similar first before we proceed on subtracting them. To do this, find the LCD or the lowest common denominator by multiplying the denominators together. Take note that whatever is done to the denominator should also be done to the numerator. Second, proceed on subtracting the numerators and put the answer over the same denominator. Since we have now similar denominators, put both of the numerators over one denominator and subtract or minus them from one another for us to see how many parts of the denominator are subtracted from the original fraction. Lastly, if possible, simplify your answer. Reduce your fraction to its least possible multiple. And there you have it, you can now subtract fractions with or without unlike denominators! Let us test the knowledge you have learned on this lesson to the game, come play with us!
