As your child steps into the final stretch of their math journey in primary school, they will have become acquaintance to many different types of numbers. Starting with the same old whole numbers and integers they’ve met during their kindergarten days, sixth-graders will have also learned about rational numbers – especially decimals, fractions and percentages – and a host of other number types.
Proper understanding of the nature and properties of each type of number is essential for children to correctly manipulate and solve several kinds of math problems as they progress into secondary school and beyond. Although many number types seem alike, they become relatively easy to tell apart once children have internalized their respective definitions and examples. Help your kids study about different types of numbers with these Knowing Our Numbers Class 6 Worksheet.
It is common for kids – and even adults – to be confused about the types of numbers. As an example, a common question asks if the number zero is a natural number – which it is not. To best explain the answer, one must explain the definition of natural numbers as all counting numbers – beginning from one.
Whole numbers are composed, in turn, of all counting numbers – except that zero is also now part of the set.
Precocious kids sometimes ask about what happens if a larger number is subtracted from a smaller number, the answer to which will lead them into finding out about negative numbers. Integers is the name of the set of numbers that include both whole numbers and negative numbers.
Fractions complicate things a little bit, representing the numbers between integers. Combined with integers, fractions are known as rational numbers.
Real numbers make things even more complex, as they include irrational numbers such as pi and the square root of two. Decimals are a tad strange; they can be rational if their decimal parts end, or if they don’t end but the digits repeat. The aforementioned decimal digits of pi neither end nor repeat, making pi irrational.
From here, number types become more abstract, and types such as imaginary numbers are better taught later in secondary school.
