Algebraic expressions wheel of fortune game - Have you ever encountered an equation like this before 3x + 4y – 7 = 6 ?
It's called an algebraic expression and the numbers with the letters you see are called coefficients; they're always beside a letter.
The number without the letter is called a constant. It always doesn't have a letter with it.
And the letters you see are called variables. They are called that way because the value of this letter can vary from any number.
The combination of these three is called an expression.
So 3x + 4y - 7 = 6
What is the value of x and y? For us to know that we have to think what numbers, when substituted to the variables, will give us the answer 6?
It can be a lot of trial and error before we identify the answer so we have to be patient with this process.
3(3) + 4(1) - 7 = 6
These are the correct values. You can verify the answer by solving the expression using PEMDAS or BOMDAS method.
First, we multiply the ones in the parentheses.
9 + 4 - 7 = 6
We solve from left to right.
13 - 7 = 6
We arrived at the same answer as the one in the expression and that's how we know our answer is correct.
This activity can be used in the classroom, during free time, or tutorial sessions. Recommended for students from 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th grades for a fun and exciting way to learn and practice solving algebraic expressions.
